It was over 20 years ago that Ernie Gross decided to fulfill his lifelong dream to open a woodworking shop. A graduate of Pratt University, Ernie had worked for several local firms, including Millers, as a retail display designer. He had finally decided to start his own business and from the garage of his home in Knoxville he began. Soon he outgrew the cramped quarters of his home and he set out to find an appropriate facility to continue his growth. Finally, he settled in a 60,000 square foot warehouse with room to accommodate his expansion. Located on West Jackson Avenue in downtown Knoxville he inevitably purchased the building, which consists of 4 floors, all of which is used for his business. Ernie Gross Designs now employs a staff of 12 craftsmen with responsibilities that include every process from design, fabrication to finishing. One floor is dedicated to the construction of the fine wood furnishings, a second floor has painting and finishing capabilities, a third is used as storage for a huge collection of rare veneers and hardware and finally the fourth is where his wood designs come to life.
